What’s in the bottle -
To sum it up quickly: 88 Proof Bliss
The creators of Horné Rum endured hundreds of taste tests in locations around the world (I know, it sounds horrible) to perfect the flavor that ultimately became Horné. The result combines choice selections of U.S. Virgin Island rum with all natural flavors and spices. Depending on your mixer (or your palette if you’ve gotten Horné on the rocks), you may detect hints of cinnamon, cherry, vanilla, and hazelnut. They’re subtle, but the rum is designed to offer an exotic, modern taste like no other rum out there.
What’s in the name -
Ok...we get it...pirates used to drink rum. But unless you and a few friends are on a deeply discounted cruise just south of the Suez, you probably won't run into one. The true history of the spirit rests in the ocean and in the sailors who brave its high-winds and high-seas. Rum, afterall, was integral in the spice trade. Sure a pirate might hijack a ship or two...but that doesn't mean we have to name every rum after one.
For the last 400 years, the honor of "ultimate test of a sailor" has gone to the rounding of Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.
This sailing mecca plays host to a daily barage of gale force winds and high seas that still challenge sailors to this day. First discovered in 1616 by sailors from Hoorn, Holland (a town just north of Amsterdam), Cape Horn and its surrounding waters are known as "the windiest place on earth." When winds reach 88 km/h it's time to put the flag out...and this flag is out on the Cape nearly every day of the year. So reef the main, settle in, and “Party up a Storm”. |
